4/10: OKAY I KNOW THIS IS A HORRENDOUS IMAGE TO INCLUDE IN THE SOFTER COLORS OF THE LANDSCAPE AROUND US BUT - on this day, this year, on our morning walk, we found ourselves walking through an onslaught of ticks. For the first time, we could just pick them out easily near the tips of many tall grass stalks along the trail and I tried to take a decent photo. Of course my little pointandshoot could not focus on their tiny bodies well and so Peter held one stalk in his bright cherry red glove. Here we have both an adult and a nymph and we are quite sure they are Rocky Mountain Wood TIcks. The next day it was cold and they disappeared and since then have not been hanging out in such huge numbers again - although we pick them up regularly.

Globe/T. Rob Brown Kevin Badgley, community outreach specialist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, points out that Permethrin is the important active ingredient in insect repellent applied only to clothing for repelling ticks Friday morning, July 26, 2013, at the Wilcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center in Joplin. He said Permethrin should not be sprayed on skin or on clothing being worn but should be sprayed on clothing exterior and allowed to dry before wearing. Other protective items shows include insect repellents with Deet, which can be sprayed on skin or clothing being worn, and duct tape for removing ticks from clothing while outdoors.
